Circular n.12 / 2001 - The introduction of the Euro

The introduction of the Euro

The introduction of the single European currency, starting from 1 January 2002, in place of the national currencies of the countries identified in the EU Council of 2 May 1998, marks the final act of European integration in the economic field.

In fact, on 31 December 2001, the transitional period, which began on 1 January 1999, will end, during which, on the basis of the principle "no prohibition, no obligation", companies and businesses could freely choose the moment in which to adopt the single European currency as account currency.

From 1 January, therefore, only the single European currency must be used as a means of payment or unit of account.
